Applicable to AC supplies up to 1,000 V and DC supplies up to 1,500 V, the standard covers EV charging equipment used with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). It also introduces requirements for bi-directional power transfer (BPT), supporting the future development of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building (V2B) technologies, with further BPT requirements expected during the final publication process.
BS EN IEC 61851-1 Ed.4.0 defines the essential electrical safety requirements, operating characteristics and interface specifications between EV supply equipment and electric vehicles. It also applies to charging equipment supplied from on-site energy storage systems, such as battery buffer systems, making it an essential reference for manufacturers, electrical engineers, EV charge point installers, designers, consultants and compliance professionals.
This standard does not cover EMC requirements, which are addressed in IEC 61851-21-2, or Mode 2 charging equipment requirements, which are covered by IEC 62752.
